The Constitution and The Travel Ban
7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Mitchell Hamline School of Law

In January and March of 2017, President Trump issued two successive executive orders that together banned people from six majority-Muslim countries – Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen – from entering the US for 90 days and indefinitely halting entry of all Syrian refugees.

Two circuit courts effectively stopped the executive order from being enacted, but on Monday, June 26, the Supreme Court allowed parts of the travel ban to go into effect. The Supreme Court will hear the case this fall.

Professor Anthony Winer, a specialist in Constitutional and International Law at Mitchell Hamline School of Law, will discuss the travel ban and issues related to the constitutionality of the ban

Open to the public. No reservations necessary. $10 general public, $5 students and seniors, and free to Mitchell Hamline students. $25 for 2 standard CLE credits for lawyers. 2 ‘clock hours’ for educators.

The event includes a brief tour of “Tracks in the Snow,” an exhibit curated by the Islamic Resource Group on display at the Mitchell Hamline Art Gallery. The exhibit features stories of some of the more than 200,000 Muslims from all over the world who currently make Minnesota their home.

Sponsored by World Without Genocide.  Exhibit co-sponsors include Douglas Heidenreich, Emeritus Professor, Mitchell Hamline; Walid and Dania Issa; and the Human Rights Committee of the Minnesota State Bar Association.

Why is Minnesota Removing so Many Children into the Child Protection System: A Critical Look at the Removal Process in Minnesota Mitchell Hamline School of Law presents a CLE and continuing education credit conference addressing Minnesota’s removal processes. The presentation will focus on current social science research related to the experience of children during the removal process. We also plan to present a comprehensive overview of Minnesota’s removal data, including a focus on short stayers in the system (children who are removed and then returned within 30 days). Panelists and expert speakers from around the county will discuss best practices for child-centered removal. Further, Minnesota’s removal hearings will be discussed in detail including the law, current practices, and examples of national models for best practice at removal hearings. There will be time at the end of the day for interactive discussion among stakeholders as to how Minnesota could improve its removal processes and hearings. This event is recommended for judges, attorneys, child protection workers, children’s attorneys, and guardians ad litem. The cost will be $75 and a $25 discounted rate will be offered for public interest attorneys and staff using the CPP discount code. Lunch will be provided with cost of entry. CLE Credits pending. CLE Event time is 9:00 am to 4:00 pm with a networking reception after.

On Demand CLE: When No one is Behind the Wheel: Liability and Other Legal Issues
All Day

When No one is Behind the Wheel: Liability and Other Legal Issues Surrounding the Development of Driverless Cars

Professor Prince examines the various legal implications of the development of autonomous cars, including in the areas of accident liability, insurance, and regulatory law. Professor Prince explores the concept that driverless cars will be a truly disruptive technology for certain law practices, especially plaintiff's and insurance defense lawyers who litigate car crashes. If drivers are no longer at fault for most car accidents, what will happen to these practices?

Cost: $30 to watch this previously recorded CLE via webcast. Free for graduates from the last two years, graduates who are on active military duty or are veterans, current students, faculty (including adjuncts), and staff. To register to attend for free, email Cathy.Englin@mitchellhamline.edu.

1 Standard CLE credit has been approved: Event Code 222067 (valid through 6/23/2018).
