The Alumni CLE Series presents "Human Resources Compliance: A Drain on Business or an Opportunity for Innovation?" Compliance is often a dirty word for businesses, but it serves an important purpose.  When it comes to Human Resources, compliance plays a pivotal role in keeping an organization out of court and off the front page. Employment laws and regulations can burden the unwary employer.  Yet, compliance provides an opportunity for innovation and creativity that can serve the organization while meeting the technical requirements of the law.  In this session, an experienced HR pro and an employment attorney will discuss a model of compliance that marries business objectives and employment laws.

In this CLE, participants will learn a compliance model that can be used in all sorts of employment situations, gain an understanding of the competing forces on employers to recruit and retain top talent within the confines of the law, and learn employment law principles using real world examples facing organizations today.


• Kate Bischoff '04 is the founder of tHRive Law & Consulting and an adjunct professor for the Human Resources Compliance Certificate Program at Mitchell Hamline. An enthusiastic management-side attorney and SHRM-SCP/SPHR-certified human resources professional, Kate Bischoff advises organizations in a wide range of industries on employment law and human resources issues, from recruitment and workplace culture to terminations. Her strengths include ensuring human resources policies and practices are compliant with federal and state laws, training employees and managers on equal employment opportunity and other supervisory topics, and handling investigations into employee grievances and complaints. Ms. Bischoff’s passionate about improving company culture and using technology (social media and data analytics) in the workplace. After several employment law trials, she speaks from experience when advising clients when administrative and court matters commence. Prior to founding tHRive Law & Consulting, Ms. Bischoff served as a human resources officer for the United States Department of State at the U.S. Embassy Lusaka, Zambia and for the U.S. Consulate General Jerusalem.

• Ali McGinty is senior human resources advisor, Landscape Structures, Inc. and an adjunct professor for the Human Resources Compliance Certificate Program at Mitchell Hamline. Ali McGinty serves as a senior human resources advisor and has been instrumental in helping employers develop human resource programs that help reduce company risks and increase employee engagement.  Her background has focused on all facets of human resources including recruiting, performance management, implementing HR best practices, payroll and benefit administration and plan design, vendor selection and implementation, and training and development.  She is a Certified Intrinsic Coach, Idealist Mentor for College Possible Mentoring Program and a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR). She obtained her Master’s Degree in Human Resource Management from Concordia University St. Paul and her undergraduate degree from St. Cloud State University in Business Management with a concentration in HR. She has worked in a variety of industries including: retail, software, manufacturing, and health care.
