Permanency Driven Advocacy: Transformative Practices and Innovative Programs
Start Date: 2/8/2019Start Time: 8:00 AM
End Date: 2/8/2019End Time: 4:30 PM
Event Description:

In addition to physical safety, discussions regarding the best interests of children have long considered permanency and stability as top priorities.  Every child protection system in the United States has “permanency timelines” outlining how long families and professionals have to complete certain tasks geared towards achieving them.  Some argue that while stability is important for families, the mandated permanency timelines either do not allow adequate time for necessary services, or alternatively, fail to address the more important aspects of family preservation and cultural responsiveness within the system.  With the rise of research and evidence-based knowledge surrounding the impact of trauma, specifically the trauma of separation from caregivers, how can professionals provide families with permanency and appropriate services within statutory time frames?  This day-long event will highlight specific programs that are transforming child welfare practices to achieve a higher rate of family preservation through non-removal options, breaking barriers to permanency for children, services that promote reunification whenever appropriate, and statutory timeline compliance.  Practitioners will offer ways to implement these advocacy skills into systemic and individual practices.
