Alumni CLE: Addressing Implicit Bias in Mediation

Event Description:
The Alumni CLE Series presents "Addressing Implicit Bias in Mediation." (Note, this is a 90-minute CLE.)

Implicit bias refers to our automatic, even unintentional, attitudes or stereotypes that we unknowingly use to create shortcuts or make decisions more quickly and easily. However, because implicit bias has tremendous impact on decision making, it can also create a barrier to resolution during mediation. This CLE will explore the concept of implicit bias and look specifically at how implicit bias affects both the process and the outcome of mediations. The presenters will draw on their experience to provide real-world examples and information on how to create space and challenge implicit bias in an attempt to become more effective participants of mediation.                                                             

Presenter Molly Tyroler is a 2010 graduate of William Mitchell College of Law and practices in the area of Minnesota Workers’ Compensation, currently working as a mediator at the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry (DLI). She has mediated hundreds of workers’ compensation cases in various stages of litigation and has conducted administrative conferences, making decisions on medical and vocational rehabilitation issues. Before working at DLI, Ms. Tyroler practiced law in the area of workers’ compensation defense.

Presenter Tiffany Williams-Virden is the Senior Director of Equity Initiatives at Hiawatha Academies, a network of charter schools located in Minneapolis. In her role, she sets the organization equity vision and priorities and leads diversity, inclusion, and equity professional development for staff.  Previous to working at Hiawatha, she partnered with Fortune 500 companies in developing a strategic vision for talent management systems. Tiffany is passionate about leading organizations to equitable outcomes and fostering inclusive cultural workplace environments. She has led local and regional workshops on organizational change management. Tiffany holds a Bachelor degree in American Studies and Political Science from the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities and is currently completing her Masters in Organizational Leadership at St. Catherine University.

Attend in person (Room 319) or via webcast. Complimentary for alumni, faculty, and staff but registration is required; $40 for non-alumni.
